Drummer's illness causes My Chemical Romance to cancel
September 03, 2006

Alternative rock band My Chemical Romance canceled as headliner of Saturday's Allentown Fair grandstand show because drummer Bob Bryar was hospitalized less than a day earlier with a serious blood infection caused by complications from a serious burn he received while filming a video last month.
Co-headliner Taking Back Sunday went ahead with its performance, as did opening acts hot like (A) robot and Circa Survive, but as many as 2,900 people who had bought $39 tickets didn't attend the show, fair Marketing Director Bonnie Brosious said.
The fair was giving refunds for anyone who did not use their ticket Saturday, and unused tickets can be returned to the point of purchase, the fair said on its Web site. But that announcement didn't appear until late Friday, shortly after the fair got word, Brosious said.
The number of tickets and attendance was still being audited late Saturday, but Brosious said at least 4,800 people attended the show.
My Chemical Romance's Web site, www.mychemicalromance.com , and label, Reprise Records, both said the band also canceled a show Sunday at the New York State Fair in Syracuse, also with Taking Back Sunday. Both the label and the band's Web site said Bryar was expected to remain hospitalized through the weekend.
The Web site said the band was 'working on putting on other shows soon in those areas for free to try and make it up to you.'
'We intend to make this up as soon as we possibly can in a completely fun and creative way for the fans to not be out in the cold,' band manager Brian Schechter said in the Reprise statement. 'The band and I feel that they should stick by their band mate and brother's side in this time and not go play a show with a different drummer. Please bear with us as we first sort out Bob's health and secondly the re-scheduling of these shows.'
My Chemical Romance bassist Fred Iero attended the Allentown show, spending time with fans at the merchandise table to explain the cancelation.
Reprise's statement said Bryar was admitted to the hospital late Thursday night. The band had performed on the MTV Video Awards that night, debuting 'Welcome to the Black Parade,' the first single off their third album, 'The Black Parade,' due for release Oct. 24.
The band played on the roof of Rockefeller Center joined by a choir dressed as human skeletons. 'We got some really bad news in the past 48 hours,' the band Web site posting said. 'He's being monitored all weekend and we want to be by his the side whole time. Unfortunately, this means we can't make this weekend's shows in Allentown and Syracuse because we need to be there by his side. A lot of people suggested we used a different drummer, but we need to stay true to Bob and our band.'
Both Bryar and band singer Gerard Way were injured filming the video, in Los Angeles with famed director Sam Beyer. Iero said in an interview Tuesday the band decided to go all out in making the video.
'We always thought, 'Oh, if we had this chance to do a video -- a cinematic thing -- we're going to go all out and kind of make a movie,' he said. 'We kind of always wanted something just really to show the band and show the way the band plays. So when we finally got the opportunity to do that we kind of, I think, went crazy.
'And yeah, there was some fire involved and Bob got burned pretty bad and Gerard kind of tore all the ligaments in his foot. But Bob's healed now -- he's got a scar and he keeps wrapping it and putting ointment on it. And Gerard's going around with a cane. But we're healing -- slowly but surely.'
My Chemical Romance, which formed in the suburbs of Newark, N.J., got its first big break at The Allentown Fair, ironically because the band Coheed & Cambria had canceled out of its fair show with Jimmy Eat World in 2002.
Its released the album 'Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge,' which has since sold more than 2 million copies worldwide.
Okay, so besides the error he made it was a good article, but come on! Fred? FRED?
